Alta Via Stage Race is much more than just a race. It’s an adventure, an experience, a chance to really live your sport and be close to nature, the countryside and the history of one of the most beautiful parts of the Mediterranean — the Ligurian coast and hills. You will travel the length of the Alta Via — the spine — of the Ligurian mountains, starting from the Province of La Spezia and cycle along the top of the Appenines and the Ligurian Alps, until you reach the Province of Imperia, on the border with France. You will pass through very varied countryside and along some technically difficult tracks.

The race route isn’t marked by strips, in line with the respect for the environment and the adventurous nature of the event: to orient themselves, the Teams have at their disposal the materials provided by the organization (maps, elevation profiles and GPS tracks). At crucial points and at the main junctions, a tracing with colored ecological spray paint will be performed, to facilitate the participants and allow them to run safely. However, GPS tracks remain the essential guiding tool, so each Team must be equipped with a satellite navigation system and should be able to use it with confidence.

Alta Via Stage Race 2020 can be ridden in four different formulas, which meet different expectations and needs: HERO, WEEKEND, E-RACE (competitive) and FUN (non-competitive). Stages’ path is different for the HERO /-WEEK END formulas, which follow the 100% race track, and the FUN /-E-RACE formulas, which follow it at 70% and provide for variations to avoid portage sections.

This year all the athletes can choose between two modes: EASY, which allows them to organize their overnight stays and luggage transport autonomously, and VILLAGE, which includes the organization of the overnight stays and the luggage transport by our staff.

All the formulas are divided into SOLO and COUPLE categories (necessary parameter for assigning the number plates and accommodation in tents or rooms), but only the competitive formulas HERO, WEEKEND, E-RACE are further divided by age and gender (necessary parameter for race rankings).
